The Land Use and Sustainability Framework was released today. This framework will be a critical policy piece, establishing the foundation for all our departments as they take on new responsibilities for land use, resource development and environmental management. It outlines the principles and approach the GNWT will follow in decision-making about land in the Northwest Territories.
Sustainability is much broader than the physical landscape – it must consider water, wildlife, land, energy, renewable and non-renewable resources. A clear, consistent approach to land-use decisions will be critical as the GNWT begins to exercise new authorities for land, resources and water. The framework has been in development for several years and is grounded in the GNWT’s ongoing work and discussions with Aboriginal governments and other stakeholders.
